Macular Degeneration Clinical Trials
Take Part In Exploring Potential Treatment Options For Macular Degeneration
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a retinal condition that affects the macula, the part of the eye responsible for sharp central vision. As the condition progresses, activities such as reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing fine details may become more difficult.
AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss among older adults and is generally classified as either dry AMD or wet AMD.
Dry Macular Degeneration
Dry AMD is the most common form of macular degeneration. It develops gradually as small deposits called drusen accumulate beneath the retina and portions of the macula become thinner over time. Vision changes often occur slowly and may become more noticeable as the condition progresses.
Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood into the macula. Although less common than dry AMD, it is responsible for most cases of severe vision loss associated with macular degeneration. Symptoms may include blurred central vision, dark spots, or straight lines appearing distorted or wavy.
How You Can Help Advance Macular Degeneration Research
Macular degeneration clinical trials evaluate investigational approaches focused on retinal health, visual function, and the underlying processes associated with dry and wet AMD.
Research may assess changes in retinal structure, central vision, drusen accumulation, abnormal blood vessel activity, and other measures used to monitor disease progression. Some studies focus on individuals with dry AMD, while others evaluate investigational therapies being studied for wet AMD or related retinal conditions.
At Equity Medical, these studies are conducted by experienced physicians and clinical research professionals following structured research protocols designed to support accurate and consistent evaluation throughout the study process.
